Title : Chemistry beyond borders: The central role of chemistry in human survival and development
Abstract:
Introduction: Chemistry is central to human existence and development, shaping agriculture, healthcare, industry, environment, and security. Its applications have provided solutions to food security, disease control, infrastructure, and even global challenges such as crime management and environmental protection.
Methods: This work is based on a conceptual review of the contributions of chemistry to different sectors of human life. Real-life applications were examined in agriculture, water treatment, construction, healthcare, security, and biological systems, highlighting the indispensable role of chemistry in each field.
Results: Findings reveal that chemistry enhances food production through soil analysis and agrochemicals, ensures potable water through purification, and supplies materials such as cement and paint for housing. In medicine, chemistry underpins drug development, diagnostics, and anesthetics, while in security, it contributes both to destructive weapons and non-lethal alternatives for safe operations. At the biological level, life is sustained by chemical reactions, and their cessation marks death, while even post-mortem preservation relies on chemical processes.
Conclusion: From birth to death, chemistry remains the foundation of human survival and progress. It is not only the “mother of sciences” but also a discipline whose applications cut across all aspects of life. Truly, life begins with chemistry and ends when chemistry ceases.
