Title : Wast valorization as reinforcement for high impact polystyrene (HIPS) recycled from waste electric and electronic equipement

Abstract:

The composite based on lignocellulosic are experiencing significant growth and generate considerable interest as realistic alternative materials [1]. This study is a contribution to the search for new material originating in plant natural resources to combat the pollution of plastics and developing our neglected natural resources such as the Spartium junceum. This work's major goal was to create and evaluate a novel composite material made of high impact polystyren (HIPS) reinforced with the Spartium junceum flour (SJ). The problem of the incompatibility of interface HIPS/SJ has been remedied by an alkaline treatment (NaOH). The green composites based on HIPS were prepared in a twin-screw extruder at 10, 20, and 30 wt% SJ ratios. The composites were investigated in terms of mechanical, rheological and physical properties (water absorption behaviour). The composite of the treated flour provide high modulus of elasticity than the untreated flour, at 30 wt% of SJ treated content a higher values of modulus 565 MPa. Infrared results showed that the structure of spartium junceum changed after the treatment process, all peaks with wave numbers greater than 3000 cm-1 come from the elongation vibration of the hydroxyl (-OH) groups. Water absorption of HIPS was affected by the presence of the SJ fibers only when their content reached 30 wt%.
